Our Pastor:

Pastor Daniel A. Basel was born in Alpena, Michigan to Amos and Marie (Prell)
Basel. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hillman, MI and confirmed at
Faith Lutheran Church, Hillman, MI on September 19, 1969. Pastor is one of the 8 children born to Amos and Marie Basel.

After graduating from Hillman High School in 1973, he attended classes at Alpena
Community College, Alpena, MI and Michigan State University for his Ag Productions Associates Degree in the Spring of 1975. Then this fisherman made the catch of his life and married Lisa Ann Campbell, from Johannesburg, Michigan on March 18, 1978 and they resided at the family farm north of Hillman, MI until January 1983.

Dan and Lisa then moved to Johannesburg, MI and he worked at Campbell Farms
and Forestry while attending night classes offered by Northcentral Michigan College. In
the late summer of 1983 he and Lisa moved to Mankato where he attended school
completing an associate’s degree at Bethany Lutheran College in 1984. He also
completed his undergraduate degree at Mankato State University (Now Minnesota State
University) in the summer of 1985. In the Fall he began classes at Bethany Lutheran
Theological Seminary, Mankato, MN and completed his ministry training as a vicar
(intern) during the 1988-89 school year. He graduated from the seminary on June 18, 1989 and was ordained and installed at Center Lutheran and Scarville Lutheran Church and School, Scarville, IA on July 9, 1989. In November 1992 he accepted the call to serve as pastor at Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler, OH where he served through July of 1999. Pastor Basel then served as Co-Pastor of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and School in Mankato, MN and until December 2006. He began his call as the Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s giving counselor beginning in 2007 serving there until February 2024.

Pastor Basel also served on the Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s Board for Home
Missions – now the Board for Home Outreach – from 1996 until 2011, serving as its
chairman and field representative for two of those years. Lisa grew up on the family farm near Johannesburg, Michigan and graduated from Johannesburg-Lewiston Schools. Besides her dedication to raising their children, she has served in many community and church and school service positions besides being employed as cook, seamstress, postmaster relief, and assistant store manager. Her present priorities are to spend time with their grandchildren and to help care for her father who lives in rural Johannesburg. She also enjoys quilting and gardening whenever possible.

Coming to Michigan, Lisa and Pastor Dan begin a new chapter under God’s grace. He was installation on February 4, 2024 at both Trinity Evangelical Lutheran in Rogers
City and Faith Evangelical Lutheran in Hillman, Michigan.

Pastor and Lisa have five children and are also blessed with 15 grandchildren and
presently reside near Atlanta, Michigan. They both look forward to serving here in
Northern Michigan in God’s country and among God’s people.
